Collateral or not Collateral

Thursday 10th August.

Campbell decided he wanted to play AK 47 so I used that excuse to organise a big game in October which looks like it is going to be a big game with about a dozen gamers involved.Campbell was up for it until Lady Hardie(his wife)had other ideas and babysitting was more important than running about the African veldt.
African standoff!

Jack sampling the local juju juice.
Anywho since Campbell and Bart hadn't played the game before I decided to put on a wee game at the club tonight giving the two of them a chance to try the rules and also for myself to get reaquainted with them myself ably assisted by my not so glamorous  assistant Jack Glanville.
Like a lot of my AK figs they've been along for a long time.

Militia in the Marsh - sounds like a rural English village.

Ak 47 is a very unpolitically correct game based on African wars in the fifties, sixties, seventies and even the nineties. It is also very easy to play and games can last for minutes or hours depending on dice rolls. It was popular in the club in the early 2000s and it was amazing to see the old hands come over to have a peruse and reminisce about previous games and armies.
Bart supremely confident even although his tanks are brewing up nicely

Bart and Campbell kitted up with their respective armies and got down to business but due to the vagaries of the rules Bart started off with two units and Campbell with four and he was defending resulted in  Bart's forces beginning  to turn into cannon fodder.

Some of Derek Hodge's doing the YMCA I think.

The militia refusing to budge

One of my presidential guard tanks helping out(yes the blue one)

Campbell's infantry not looking very professional
This was to be the norm for most of the game even when Bart finally managed to get his reinforcements on.It was only at the end that Bart started to damage Campbell's forces but by then it was too late resulting in a glorious win for Campbell

Bart's last bid for glory

Bart left licking his wounds, slightly unamused especially when he found out that one of his big weapons couldn't inflict collateral damage.
I'm sure the Polish Exile army in Africa will be back and kicking ass.
A very good game and hopefully the first of a few practise games before the big game in October.
See you when I see you.

Tri-Nation action in Venice

Wednesday 09 August.

Feeling as though I havn't played a game in ages Colin Jack decided to utilise the Venetian scenery for an unknown WW2 attack on the city of canals. That unknown in that it never happened except in Colin's mind.
Some pictures of the lull before the storm.

The choir boys are still chirping away

The game involved an attack by Canadian paras supported by some Royal Marine commandos who actually didn't last long and had to be helped by some Brazilian infantry who just happened to be in the vicinity. The defenders were a mixed bag of Italian paras and infantry who were all ensconsed in the Venetian buildings waiting to spring their carefully laid traps.
Moving up.

Para command squad with the C.O. suitably equipped with foxhorn.
I took control of the Canadians whilst Colin took charge of the seaborne forces.I kicked off by dropping my paras on randomly chosen areas making sure that I didn't loose them all as in our Aegean games.
My lads landed safe and sound and after gathering themselves together headed for the centre of town where the natives were a wee bit hostile.Colin landed the first of his marines straight into the muzzles of Bill's Italians who were lying in wait in a warehouse situated on one of the wharfs.
Messing about on the canal

ready to rumble.
After Colin's forces were whittled down he decided to storm the building and after he cleared the bad guys out found that he didn't have much time to consolidate before Bill attacked the building flamethrower et al.Colin's forces  suffered severely and ended up heading back for the safety of his boats.
Flamethrower haven.

Time for a brew before heading across the green.

Da da da da!
My paras cautiously made their way towards the canal only to be met with gunfire from a nearby building stopping them in their tracks.I started trying to pin them down with gunfire until my mortar could come into action and help with some payback.
Can't beat a good tree to hide behind.

The difference between the two forces.
Bill had placed a sniper in the tower situated in the middle of town and he spent the evening making our forces keep their heads down and taking a few valuable prizes with his shooting skill.
Colin looked around for some reinforcements to bring on and found them in the form of Brazilian infantry he had painted up for some of last years games. They were duly put on a boat and ferried towards Venice.
Out for a pizza.
More of Bill's Italians opened up on my paras once they started moving across open ground but apart from a few casualties stayed focused on the job in hand.My mortar started to hit paydirt and eventually softened up one of Bill's buildings enough for me to rush in and clear this nest of vipers before heading to the next building to complete our revenge on the flamethrower team.
Italian surprise
Colin's Brazilians came charging up the harbour hoping to get to grips with Bill's Italians in the harbour building only to lose a few before coming off second best in the following fistfight.Colin got revenge by slowly taking out the remaining men in the building.
Sambaing up the pier!

Da da da da in Portugese!
Bill's machine gun now opened up on my lads crossing the green in front of the house that they were inhabiting making them hit the dirt.I changed the direction of the mortar fire to try and dislodge this gun so that Colin's only remaining commando squad could finish the off in their own way-up,close and personal.
Still waiting on a pizza.

Knock knock(in Italian)
Very sneaky Italian mortar team soon to be extinct.
My para squad that was suitably crouching behind the walls of a house, fired at and destroyed Bill's mortar squad.Ithink Bill was about to look for some white flags. The only problem they then had was the upstairs inhabitants in the form of Bill's hq who typical of Italians were being rather noisy so my paras had to nip upstair and deal with the noisy lot. This they did with ease.Things were not going Bill's way and I had no intention of letting up on the momentum.
Crawling over the bridge.
Across the square my second squad had managed to pick themselves up with the help of their hq and headed towards the Italians in a nearby house firing at them along the way to keep their heads down. They finally made it to a bridge ready to assault when I decided to just pepper the house with gunfire as it meant the bad guys couldn't budge.
Forward boys!

"It's that way!"

Rapid fire!
Colin's machine gun continued their spat with Bill's sniper but to no avail as Bill's sniper replied killing the Brazilian co in the process.
The tower of death-Bill's sniper spot.
Bill had finally given up as his forces were rapidly decreasing and decided on a mass surrender.A good game had by one and all and not a German in sight.
All figures, scenery and scenario provided by Colin Jack as well as an excellent repast-pasta of course washed down by a glass of Chilean Devil's Cellar and they weren't even in the fight.
Next weeks game will be back into the realms of  7TV-can't wait!

See you when I see you.

An evening trip around Israel.

Wed 26th July.
                                                                                Vs

After having a four week sabbatical from gaming due to holidays etc,we found ourselves at Comrade Bill's for a giant Arab/Israeli game taking place in the early sixties and consisted of a twelve by eight board encompassing the whole of Israel from the Golan Heights to the Sinai desert with the river Jordan bisecting the table.
Looking across the river Jordan towards Jerusalem with a wee bit poetic license

We were struggling for something to draw dice out off!
A tremendous variety of armour and vehicles were on display including Centurions,M47 Pattons,T55s,AMX 10s,Shermans,Su122s,right down to Panzer 1Vs and Renault Chars. These were complemented by M3 halftracks and lorries complete with infantry.
M47 Pattons-The tank that Arnie Schwarzenegger drove when he done his national sevice.

Israeli armour on the prowl.

a couple of nice Assault guns.

Shermans with AMX10 turrets.

Two ultra modern T55(for this era).

Two Panzer 1vs(very dated for this era).

And as for these Renaults.

Ready to dole out retribution.
The sides were divvied out with Bill taking the part of the Syrians Pz 1Vs and all,Mr Ray the Egyptians and Colin Jack the Jordanians.Bill Miller and myself having no political qualms( I hate all politicians)took the part of the Israelis .an easy game we thought until we were told no airpower-bummer!
Sleepy Jerusalem.
We all took our allotted parts of the table and before we could say Shalom the Arabs all made their move albeit very cagey.
The Israelis had a few Kibbutzim strewn across the landscape and the one in the south soon had amorous intentions from Mr Ray's Egyptian armour showing their bullying side. This kibbutz didn't hold out for long due to having no antiarmour weapons apart from molotovs.Their defiance was whittled down before being overwhelmed by Egyptian paras and cleared out completely.
Kibbutz in the sun.
Bill's makeshift armour slowly made their way across the river Jordan and engaged our Centurions flukely destroying one in the process.
Bummer!
Flattering to deceive.
Colin's Jordanian Pattons made their way across the only bridge across the Jordan looking at times as though his tanks were in midair.
Who needs Moses when you can float.
Our plan was to stall Colin and portion out the rest of our forces where they were neede to engage the invaders.
Our artillery was being used to clean out Colin's Arab legion who were embedded in the ruined Arab village east of Jerusalem and were whittled down enough for my infantry who were waiting in Jerusalem for the opportunity to clear them out.
Jordanian bad guys.

Throwing a spanner in the works-literally!
After my infantry became the new village owners Colin decided to shoot point blank at them with one of his tanks to no avail. My men responded by assaulting the tank and immobilising it for the rest of the game.A few more hits from our artillery confirmed this point.
Looking for targets.
Mr Ray's forces were slowly(very) edging their way towards Jerusalem so infantry with support were diverted towards this probe and a big firefight between tanks and infantry ensued with the object of us stopping Ray's forces in their tracks but not leaving us enough forces due to casualties for a counterattack.Where is airpower when you need it?
Target rich environment.

Doesn't come without a cost.

Ray's forces slithering up.
Bill's Syrians were slowly making their way across the river Jordan with the intent of overrunning our northern kibbutz but the lack of quality in his armour was beginning to show as most of his armour was of Second World War vintage which was what a lot of Syrian armour was like at the time, obviously given to them by the French. His infantry were ambling up towards the Jordan as though they were out for a Sunday stroll.
The game was developing into a very immobile game turning nto a slugmatch with our glorious defenders plugging the gaps where needed and not being able to fight in their usual manner.
Shoot to kill!

Oops!

Single handedly holding them off.
This was how the game progressed with our solitary Centurion gallantly holding off the Syrian advance.Colin's forces had found that the bridge over the river Jordan was maybe a bridge to far as his forces stagnated on the bridge.
Retribution.
In the south it just turned into a gunfight with the intention of being last man standing.
An awful lot of scrap metal.

Didn't get very far at the end.
With the evening coming to a close we made a last ditch attempt to retake the southern kibbutz and destroy most of the Arab armour but the game like most of the Arab/Israeli wars developed into a stalemate probably from outside Russian/American pressure but also the final whistle.
Downtown Jerusalem
The game ended literally in a score draw with everybody's forces heading back to the start lines to lick their wounds.
A nacky anti aircraft tank built on a AMX30 body.

A great game with lots of great toys on display. This was a game that Colin had wanted to put on for a long time.Probably the amount of time he needed to put all these great toys together that were on display.

                        Belligerents-

                               Bill Gilchrist-Syrians
                               Mr Ray-Egyptians
                               Colin Jack-Jordanians

Bill Miller and myself-the oft picked on Israelis.

The evening was proceeded once again by an amazing meal from the delightful Helena who must be under the impression that we all needed fattened up.

All scenery, scenario and toys provided by Colin Jack.

I provided the game cloth which was just a dust sheet spray painted .Lady Watson must be wondering why all her plants are turning green with brown dots.

                                                               See when I see you!.
